The Unknown Sacrifice (May 27th, 2022)

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends,” John 15:13 reads. On this Memorial Day, we remember how deep our nation has bled over the last two centuries for freedom, fellow man, and our way of life. This deep devotion and fervent respect to our fallen is shown by the continual watch of the “Old Guard” at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as the “Old Guard,” was selected by the Army’s official ceremonial unit on April 6, 1948. Since then, the Old Guard has stood watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the sun, rain, and snow. The 3rd Infantry’s constant watch has tremendous symbolic meaning worth reflecting on throughout the year but especially on Memorial Day. A soldier marches 21 steps along a black mat behind the Tomb and immediately turns and stands for 21 seconds toward the east and then an additional 21 seconds toward the north. Following these pauses, the soldier walks down the mat again for 21 steps. The soldier presents weapon placement on his shoulder, showing how this regiment guards the Tomb against any threat. The number 21 is very special in the military because it is the highest symbolic military honor that can be given.

So many heroes have sacrificed for us that we don’t even know all their names. This selfless devotion to our nation’s values has caused many to lay down their life with no thought of themselves, but only for their friends, families, and communities. These exceptional soldiers chose love toward others in self-sacrifice so that we never have to live without the blessing of freedom.

Team Z remembers the known soldier and the unknown soldier in death. We must not squander, but cherish the freedoms they died for; freedoms given us by our Divine Creator. Visit a gravesite or say a prayer, standing straight, realizing the weight and gravity of the day, and thanking the brave who gave their lives for many.

Sincerely,
