Freedom Always Fights Forward, Never Backward. Over the last week angry voices have told you that the country has gone backwards. The Supreme Court of the United States has interpreted the Second Amendment as it concerns carrying a firearm to prevent physical harm to one’s person, the First Amendment as it concerns whether school vouchers may be used in a religious institution and the ability of a coach to pray following a game, and the Tenth Amendment as it concerns whether the federal or the state government is allowed to make law concerning termination of a life.
The Court’s decisions have catapulted the nation into debate. It is that very right to debate, and the Court’s most recent decisions, which speak to the great freedoms we enjoy in this grand Nation of ours, the tracks of which were laid on the very first Independence Day.
Under Colonial and English rule, the people occupying our great land suffered under the tyrannical rule of a large and powerful central government. That government cared little for the “peasants.” It deprived them of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is for this precise reason that America was founded as a Republic of states with a decentralized government. In 1776 the people of this land knew that for people to truly be free, power must be vested in the people, with limited power given by them to the states, and extremely limited power given to a small federal government. Our Founders inked with their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor a philosophy that breathes into the fabric of civil society that “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” That people “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” These early Americans summarized what it meant to be American and be a human – our Creator gives the people unalienable Rights to live in a free society. These rights are granted not by an institution, but by our Creator.
Over the last fifty years, what was supposed to be a small, decentralized federal government, has usurped these very rights from the people, drawing nearer every day to the tyrannical rule suffered by our forefathers under Colonial and English rule. This week returns power back to the people, and to their respective states where it was originally vested and always belongs. A free people now have the right to protect themselves from physical harm, to freely exercise their religion without government interference, and to seek local redress or support for life-terminating decisions.
Independence Day reminds us that Freedom Always Fights Forward, Never Backward. This year we are reminded of these principals more than ever. Team Z celebrates these great American beliefs and those who sacrificed so much to create this warm blanket of Independence and Freedom.
